The Nine Gates

Eleven Years ago I began a series referred to as "The Nine Gates". Typically the passages are rather old by our countries standards. I can only reflect on their history and imagine the stories of those who have graced these portals. I never know where I might find the next door. But, when I come across it in my travels, I recognize it right away... Here are seven of the nine.

Nova Scotia

I've driven from Virginia to Nova Scotia twice, a twenty two hour drive. The first time I traveled there alone, arriving on a cold rainy day in March. Peggy's Cove was my destination. Upon arrival at the small cove, I sign proclaimed a population of 60. Getting out of the car, I stood in the rain and watched the waves wash high over the rocks, beating upon the sides of the lighthouse. I felt as if I had driven to the edge of the world and was standing there looking over the edge. The feeling of solitude and remoteness was overwhelming.

Maine

When I decided to take up photography as a second career, my first serious photo shoot was Maine. It was March, and in the North, still very cold. I tend to take all of my photographs at the end of Winter, when nature is still stark and cold and the tourists are yet to arrive. I'm able to travel and survey the landscapes before, basking in the quite and solitude of nature unspoiled at that moment.

Maine holds a place in my heart and is very dear to me. I've traveled there five our six times over the years to photograph the rugged coastline. Each day I rise early search for my shot. Each evening I sit in the B&B, sipping a drink and maybe reading a few pages from a Stephen King novel. After all, King's books are centered in Maine, and they tend to remind me of the unique feeling one gets when wandering through the backroads along the coast. Quite and mysterious.

Cape Fear

The very name "Cape Fear" evokes feelings & memories of water, beaches and something a bit sinister waiting just around the corner. The movie "Cape Fear" helps to heighten those feelings while creating a certain mystique.

I've been drawn to the Cape Fear area ever since I began taking my family there for late spring or early fall vacations. During those times, the beaches were fairly empty. This solitude provided the perfect backdrop for one on one family time and of course, photography.

Without the constant presence of people, I've been able to capture the solitude that I felt there. Something that I seek to represent in all of my photographs.

Many old style beach houses still stand on the Cape Fear beaches. With a little imagination, you can be transported back to a younger and simpler time...

West Virginia offers wild and unspoiled nature at its best. I've traveled there four or five times to photograph the state during the cold harsh months of Winter. The photograph at Twin Falls nearly ended in disaster as I slipped in the mud and my backpack, tripod and cameras followed me as I tumbled down a slippery slope.

I've learned to be respectful of peoples privacy there. Once, on a back road just as night was about to fall, I stopped to photograph an old house sitting in a field of fresh snow. Just as I completed the task of setting up my equipment, lights in nearby woods came on, a door opened, and the dogs were let out. I threw my equipment back into the car as the barking drew close. Be careful, be respectful and be on guard when you're on the road alone...

Georgia & South Carolina

Georgia & South Carolina holds a certain Southern charm for all visitors. I've participated in a number os Art Shows in Georgia over the years and I've had great success in selling my work there. This is why I always wait with anticipation each season to see if I'll be juried once again into the fine shows held there.

Only recently in the last couple of years have I begun to seek photographic opportunities in both states. Images of some of my more interesting finds can be seen below. Also, I'm currently working on a few images for 2011 that will be added here in the near future.

My home state, and thus one of the most photographed by me. Some of the best and worst elements of the South can be found in Virginia. Instead of writing on about the coastal waterways, mountains, fields and farms, small towns and large, I'll simply let the photographs speak their own meaning.

The West

In March of 2007 I took the first of two trips West. Francine and I packed the car and headed for California with the intent of shooting the coastline. Along the way we made stops in New Mexico and Arizona, occasionally dropping down onto the old road, Route 66. That year we made it to California and traveled the Pacific Coast Highway, stopping to photograph "Big Sur". On that trip I also found my way to Yosemite, one of nature's wonderlands. On our second trip west, we returned to New Mexico and the Ghost Ranch in Abiqueue and Taos to photograph the Mission. From there, Arizona and Monument Valley....
