Art in Black & White
From the Camera of G.M.
Howerton
G. M. Howerton is a multiple award
winning photographer residing in Danville, Virginia. All of his
images are individually created by hand using traditional darkroom
methods. No digital manipulation of any kind is used.
Following the techniques of Pre-Visualization and Ansel
Adam's Zone System approach, Howerton takes Bold & Expressive
photographs of America's Landscape.
Howerton develops his own film in his Darkroom and Studio which
is housed in approximately a 1600 sq ft. space. Once the film is
developed, washed and dried, Howerton begins the process of creating
Fine Art Silver Gelatin photographs. Using both Bessler and Durst
enlarging equipment, the newly developed sheets of film are
projected by the enlargers onto Silver Gelatin Paper. Howerton
practices the Art of Dodging & Burning to create his expressive
images on the Silver Geletin Fine Art Fiber paper.
Moving from the Enlarging Table, the next step is the "Wet
Tray" process during which time the Silver Gelatin paper is
developed and readied for a 1-2 hour water bath to remove chemical
residue.
After the water bath, the Fine Art Photograph is carefully
placed on screens to dry overnight. The next day, the photograph is
ready for heat press mounting onto an Acid Free Matt Board. At this
point, the photograph is ready either to be framed for display or
bagged as a loose image for sale.
The keys to Howerton's dynamic images are
Pre-Visualization and adherence to Ansel Adams Zone System
technique. Howerton was taught the Zone System by a one time Award
Winning Photographer who had received training from John Sexton.
John Sexton was a one time protege' of Ansel Adams.
All of the materials used in the construction of each
Howerton Original
are acid free and of archival standards. Howerton's work has been referred to as environmental
isolationism, absent of the daily presence of humanity. He prefers
to consider his approach to photography as a search for escape from
the day to day excess. In his photographs he seeks to define
solitude, peace, and drama.
We hope you enjoy viewing representations of his work on this
website. We hope you have the opportunity of seeing his work in
person.
